Aerial Abstracts

Whenever I’m next to someone piloting a drone, I see them recording video. Why shouldn’t you? 4 or even 8K footage while high above amazing landscapes in great light?

It’s just not what I see in my mind’s eye when I think about aerial landscapes. This abstract mindset has probably developed out of an interest of shapes, color and things so grand (or small), it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense from a human perspective.

That’s exactly one of the reasons why I’m drawn to minimalist, intimate landscapes in the first place. The other reason is the sense of flying and looking at the Earth in a way that makes you forget about Earthly worries for a moment. Having a tool like the drones these images were shot with got me out of a creative rut and a dream that I made reality after it went up in the air.

Project: “Rivers of Iceland”

Back in 2019, I finally had everything arranged to go on a long awaited aerial photography trip on board Haraldur “Volcano Pilot” Diego. But unfortunately, the weather was against us - as it is in Iceland. We had to postpone the flight until the next time I returned to Iceland.

But that went differently than we all had hoped. After going off radar in 2022, Haraldur’s Cessna was found at the bottom of Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. Likely an emergency landing took place on the ice and it couldn’t hold the weight of the plane. Everywhere, including in the small photo community that I was part of, this was the saddest news we could get. Our workshop driver and Haraldur’s brother, Davíð, is someone I am still on contact with and it was especially hard on him as he was in the search party as part of search and rescue operations.

While I never really wanted hang out another Cessna after this tragic incident, the dream of specifically shooting Icelandic rivers in an abstract way, never left either. This strange dichotomy of wanting to create art without having the “tool” to do so, let me to another tool I had mixed feelings about too. Drone photography is loud and more out of touch with outdoor activities, but after hosting a workshop in northern Iceland in 2025, I took some time to focus on this photo project. It is with mixed feelings of emotion that I present to you this small collection of images.

On the very first outing, I got a warning on the remote control of the Mavic 4 Pro that the wind was on the strong side. I shot a few images anyway and returned to home at around 60% of battery left. But then the wind picked up and had to fly against it to reach me. As I saw the battery drop one percent every two seconds, I lowered altitude slowly and steadily to get as much distance from it as possible, but I had to fly in high power mode just to fight against the strong southerly wind. With no more than 4% battery and a colorful pair of boxers, the drone hovered over the landing site as I gently put it down and got one of the images shown earlier.
